Y is for Yahoo is for Portal
'Portal' is an architectural term meaning a grand, magnificent or
imposing entrance or gateway, for example, to a cathedral, castle
or a walled city.
In the world of the internet it refers to a website which acts as
a gateway to many services: search engine, directory, email, online
chat, e-commerce, news services, personalised portal page, music, travel,
podcasts, RSS feeds, you name there's a portal website out there trying
to tempt you to make their's your homepage.
Yahoo is the obvious example.
But what about Google. Google is the mult-billion dollor search engine,
and it retains its minimalist page design which includes a big search
box in a mostly white page.
But start clicking around the few links there are on the Google page
and there's another world inside of Google Labs, for example, where
lots of 'experiments' are taking place.
My advice: don't get stuck in any gate. By all means enter the world
of the web by whichever gate that takes your fancy, but remember:
there's a whole universe out there to explore!
