A Rich Tapestry of Religious Life
A
12th century chapel and priory dedicated to St Bartholomew, the old parish
church of St Nicholas (14th century), the execution of Deryk Carver for
his Protestant beliefs during the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary, the
early establishment of a Quaker community, the Anglo-Catholic revival of
the nineteenth century and the re-emergence of Roman Catholicism after
a long period of persecution, and numerous forms of alternative spiritualities
in the twentieth century: these are a few threads in the
tapestry of the city's religious history.
