Ye olde part of the city was laid out in a grid pattern. The original
Brighton was founded as a fishing settlement and the boundary of the
old town still exists in the form and names of North Street, West Street
and East Street.
St. Nicholas Church in Dyke Road is the ancient parish church. It
was built on a hill outside the town, probably as a place of safety
and as a landmark for seamen. It is the oldest surviving building.
